There were several Thirteenth Doctor reveals at San Diego Comic Con, including this panel introduction.

The highlight reel was an even bigger draw of course, giving us a glimpse of the series’ direction and aesthetic with Jodie Whittaker in the role.

Here is the Doctor Who panel in two parts:

Of course, there are toys to discover as well. Kyle Anderson at Nerdist has the scoop on all the new Thirteenth Doctor merchandise announced in San Diego.

Straight outta SDCC… DC Comics!

With all the big San Diego Comic Con announcements, I thought I’d share the best of them in a few posts this week.

You can’t get SDCC without DC, So what’s up at DC / Warner? It looks like they are releasing a live-action Teen Titans tv series in the dark, grim, and gritty mold of the Batman films or the TV series Gotham. The series Titans is set to debut on DC’s $75 a year streaming service. They reversed course from the animated series’ light and happy model for some real darkness. Look for it in the latter half of 2018.

Over at Warner Brothers, DC has steered the venerable Shazam comic book in the exact opposite direction. The cinematic Shazam ripples with silliness and a light-hearted air only seen in DC’s animated features, though not even all of those. Shazam is scheduled for release April 5, 2019.

Pekar Park Comic Fest

I somehow missed this gem. It is coming up tomorrow, Saturday the 14th. They say:

The fourth Pekar Park Comic Book Fest will return to Coventry Village on July 14. The free event spotlights local, independent comic book writers, illustrators and retailers and offers workshops for adults and kids.

The event will run from noon until 5 p.m. The day will culminate in a showing of the Harvey Pekar biopic “American Splendor.”

“Northeast Ohio is home to so many talented comic writers and illustrators, and Harvey really paved the way for these local independent comic and zine creators,” says Heights Libraries Coventry Branch Manager Pat Gray. “What better way to honor him than by getting all this talent together in one place, and inspiring new artists?”

The day’s workshops and panels features some fascinating topics. Each session will be held at the Heights Libraries’ Coventry Branch. Topics include:

The Art of Comix and Graphic Novels: Terri Libenson and Angela Oster will discuss the art of illustrating comix and graphic novels.
Publishing Comix and Zines: Bryn Adams, Miguel Hernandez, Melissa O’Grady and Kyle Osborne
What to Read Next? Reader’s Advisory for New and Favorite Graphic Novels and Comix: Kate Atherton, Tyler Federico, John G., Joshua Harlan and Leslie Nichol
The event will feature the comic vendors Comics Are Go, Imaginary Worlds, Mac’s Backs Books on Coventry; publishers Outlandish Press and Vagabond Comics; and artists Ted Sikora, Ashley Ribbletts, Keith Allen, Kate Atherton, Lindsey Bryan, Jed Collins, Michelle and Miguel Hernandez, Clare Kolat, Craig Lindsley, McKenzie Merriman, Chloe Niclas, Noelle Richards, Nathan Ward, and Tim Switalski.

The day’s activities for kids will include superhero crafts, comic making with Lake Erie Ink, spray tattoos, balloon animals and more!

September 29, 2018 from 11 am until 7 pm, Celestial Attic will be hosting its first ever Picnic at the End of the Universe. This event will be a giant, geeky, potluck / picnic celebrating all the geeky arts. Best of all, it is all FREE!

There will be giveaways, prizes, music, games and demos to enjoy. There will be a costume contest as well. Cosplayers, bring your best!

We will also host a Really, Really Free Market that day. It is a sort of swap meet where you leave the geeky stuff you don’t want, and take what you like. You can either take the remains back home at the end of the day or let us donate them to charity. This is a great way to let your books, stickers, buttons, DVDs, T-shirts, games, toys and tapes find a new home.

Bring a dish, drink or dessert to share. Bring a game to play. Meet people. Enjoy the day.

We could use sponsors to buy burgers, dogs, buns, condiments, plates, cutlery and cups. If you are interested in getting your shop or product in front of Cleveland’s geekiest people, then this is an opportunity you will not want to miss. Email: cleveland@celestialattic.com.
