Straight outta SDCC… DC Comics!

With all the big San Diego Comic Con announcements, I thought I’d share the best of them in a few posts this week.

You can’t get SDCC without DC, So what’s up at DC / Warner? It looks like they are releasing a live-action Teen Titans tv series in the dark, grim, and gritty mold of the Batman films or the TV series Gotham. The series Titans is set to debut on DC’s $75 a year streaming service. They reversed course from the animated series’ light and happy model for some real darkness. Look for it in the latter half of 2018.

Over at Warner Brothers, DC has steered the venerable Shazam comic book in the exact opposite direction. The cinematic Shazam ripples with silliness and a light-hearted air only seen in DC’s animated features, though not even all of those. Shazam is scheduled for release April 5, 2019.

Just how weird was the Mindharp of Sharu?

Over at IO9, James Whitbrook takes a look at the weirdness that is The Mindharp of Sharu. Despite being an odd duck, it did add to the Star Wars canon and gives us our only glimpse at the time when Lando owned the Falcon. Until Solo gets here and fixes that, we can enjoy Whitbrook’s peek.

He says:

It’s funny to think that, in a novel which otherwise seems to barely even understand either Lando or the Star Wars galaxy at large, tiny details from it have sprung forth and taken root in the franchise all these years later.

The Great Muppet Caper

The Great Muppet Caper is coming to the Cedar Lee Theatre at 11 am, Saturday and Sunday April 21st and 22nd. You will believe, a frog can ride a bike! Their website says:

Synopsis
The Muppets find themselves embroiled in a jewel heist in their second foray onto the big screen. Kermit, Fozzie and Gonzo attempt to restore their sullied journalistic reputations by identifying the thief who has been stealing gems from fashion designer Lady Holliday. “The Muppet Movie” involves even more spectacular scenes for this film, including a group bicycle ride in a London park, an aqua ballet “Miss Piggy style,” and a tux-and-tails dance sequence.
