Straight outta SDCC… Comics & Books

Bleeding Cool News’ Jude Terror has an announcement from IDW of Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein: Artist’s Edition to be released in late 2019. This masterpiece combines the sublime comic artistry of Bernie Wrightson with one of the greatest science fiction stories of all time.

Also from Jude Terror at Bleeding Cool, Marv Wolfman will be scripting a four-issue Diablo miniseries illustrated by Piotr Kowalski for Titan. Based in the video game, the series follows human investigators as they uncover humanities origins.

And, not necessarily comic book news, Batman’s issue 50 continues to carry controversy after the New York Times revealed the plot twist in the book. Now, comic writer Tom King stirred the pot after revealing his San Diego Comic Con bodyguard on Twitter.

artemisfooterArtemis: The Starship Bridge Simulator, resembles a certain science fiction franchise from the 1960s, though not close enough to touch that third rail of publication and starship adventure everywhere, copyright. It is close enough that you and five friends can pretty quickly sort out what you should be doing. Decades of TV and cinema have served as your starship bootcamp and the roles in the game are familiar: Helm, Weapons, Science, Communications, Engineering, and oh yes, Captain. This makes the game a highly geeky and social activity.

Now zoom out. The online community for Artemis, the forums, and the gatherings including an Artemis convention, Armada, all combine to form a community. This community gathers to play, mods their systems, builds bridges, forms clubs, competes online, competes in person, it even cosplays and participates Artemis larps, live-action role playing games.

ENGScreenNow zoom back in. Over there in the corner tinkering with the new Artemis engine. That’s Thom Robertson, the creator of Artemis, but he is humble enough to realize the game is no longer his. It’s a community project. It is a work in progress. It is a hell of a lot of fun.

Atari Comics?

If you were the right age, or in the right fandoms in the mid 1980s, you probably saw a few of these. Well, let us take you back on a nostalgic journey with the help of Atari Age, your online source for all things Atari.

You can get many resources at the site including how-to guides, rarity lists covering the major cartridges, and little gems like the magazines, and even the comics dedicated to that unstoppable behemoth that was Atari. Shortly after publishing these gems, Atari, in fact, stopped. The micro computer and video game implosion of 1984 took it and many other systems down, clearing the way for Nintendo’s rise.

The comics though… These featured top flight writers and artists of the day like Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, George Perez, Dick Giordano, Gil Kane and Frank Ciricco.

Nintendo Labo

Nintendo’s take on VR and the Maker movement drops today. Nintendo Labo combines VR, cardboard and a Nintendo Switch into a variety of DIY devices from the gimmicky to the divine. The Nintendo Labo Toy Con 01 Variety Kit offers Nintendo Switch owners the following new toys and capabilities: Two Toy-Con RC Cars, a Toy-Con Fishing Rod, a Toy-Con House, Toy-Con Motorbike, and a Toy-Con Piano. It remains to be seen how well these cardboard creations hold up or just how playable they are.

The flagship of this new cardstock play mode is definitely the Nintendo Labo Toy Con 02 Robot Kit. The combination of VR and wearable control surfaces transforms the player INTO a giant robo. While definitely holding the most promise, it remains to be seen how many players want to strap $300+ worth of Nintendo gear to their bodies with cardboard while they go stomping around the living room. More accurately, it remains to be seen how many parents will allow it, no matter how fun it looks.
